Training in urological surgery continues to evolve in order to meet the expected competencies of the independent practicing urologist. Yet research suggests that senior residents and recently graduated urology residents in the United States and Europe have low rates of confidence for independently performing many urological procedures. This lack of confidence is not unique to urological surgery; it also reflects a growing body of evidence in surgical training that demonstrates many graduating trainees are not perceived by faculty to be ready to operate independently. This trend in surgical training challenges our collective responsibility to meet the needs of society by delivering high-quality patient care.
